Coolant Concentration

To guarantee an optimum machining process of your materials it is mandatory to have the right coolant concentration of your water-soluble coolant. Depending on the coolant concentrate,  machining process and material a different concentration may be required. A basic cutting operations with a small chip cross section typically needs a low concentration. A heavier cutting operation with larger chip cross section tend to use a higher concentration. Semi-synthetics with a higher mineral oil content will have more lubricity. The consequences of the concentration being too low or too high (wrong mixing ratio) can be as follows:

High concentration:

  • Foam
  • Smoke
  • Oily residue & deposits
  • Skin irritation

Low concentration:

  • Corrosion on workpiece and machine
  • Decreased tool life
  • Fungus & bacteria
  • Reduced sump life
  • Unstable coolant
  • Workpiece quality issues      `

We suggest that you follow the concentration recommendations of the coolant manufacturer in their product information. In the case that you still have problems, an adjustment of the mixing ratio as mentioned above may help you as well.
